Now is the Perfect Time to Consider an Electric Vehicle

Plug-in electric vehicles are becoming more prevalent across the U.S—have you noticed these vehicles around town? How about the charging stations that continue to be installed across Tompkins County? The county has become a welcoming community for electric vehicles (EVs) by providing charging, service, and support to local and visiting drivers. With the availability of various models and incentives, everyone in the market to acquire a vehicle should consider driving electric.

Pure EVs are low maintenance, which means less trips to the mechanic, no gas required, and the convenience of charging at home. Purchasing and owning an EV may be more affordable than you think: you can find some good deals on EVs and fuel costs will be significantly reduced. The electric range of EVs is continuing to improve as well, with several all-electric models capable of going 150 miles or more before charging and a growing network of chargers that can get you on your way again quicker.

Incentives Available for Electric Vehicles

New Yorkers can take advantage of two discounts when purchasing an EV: the Federal Tax Credit for Plug-in EVs, and the New York State Drive Clean Rebate. The total amount for each discount will vary among models based on the battery size and electric range, but combining both discounts can provide up to $9,500 off your purchase! Several manufacturers are leveraging these incentives to offer low lease payments on new EVs.

The federal tax credit is applied during your tax filing after purchasing any new qualifying plug-in EV the year before. Purchasing an EV now through the end of 2018 will give you the quickest turn-around for this incentive. The credit ranges from $2,500 to $7,500 depending on the battery capacity. This incentive is dependent on your tax liability, so it might be useful to consult a tax professional to determine the full potential for you. The credit will phase out for each manufacturer after 200,000 qualified EVs have been sold in the United States. Tesla recently hit this mark and its vehicles will now only be eligible for partial credit amounts through 2019; GM is also likely to start the phase out for its full incentive amounts soon.

In New York State, drivers can get an instant discount of up to $2,000 at the time of purchase or lease for eligible plug-in EV models at qualified dealerships. The rebate is based on the vehicle’s electric range (e-miles): $500 for vehicles with less than 20 e-miles, $1,100 for vehicles with 20 – 39 e-miles, $1,700 for vehicles with 40 – 119 e-miles, and $2,000 for any vehicle with over 120 e-miles. The rebate also stipulates that any vehicle priced over $60,000 is only eligible for $500, regardless of e-mile range. Qualified dealerships receive the rebate when they show a sales or lease transaction for a New York resident with that discount taken off the vehicle price.
